ADS MEDICAL PROJECT OFFICER for TYPE 1 DIABETES CONSULTING SKILLS and TECHNOLOGIES PROJECT
The Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) seeks a person for 12 months employment as a Medical Project Officer for the Type 1 Diabetes Consulting Skills and Technologies Project. This is a National Diabetes Supply Scheme funded project. The work will ideally be undertaken over a 12 month period, with a target for completion in February 2011. This is funded as a part time position (0.5 FTE) for a medically qualified person with remuneration based on a NSW Department of Health Award at Registrar Year 4 ($98,731 FTE plus 9% superannuation). The person to commence in the position would have clinical experience in adult endocrinology, and preferably have completed advanced training in endocrinology. He/she should have a particular interest and prior experience in Type 1 diabetes care, including with insulin pumps and glucose sensors. He or she would also be well organised and able to systematically seek and synthesise evidence and, with support, be able to take a lead role in writing. It is desirable that the applicant would have a research degree with literature research experience and some publication record with writing skills facilitating communication with health professionals. The successful applicant should have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work autonomously and also closely within a team including relevant members of the Type 1 Diabetes Consulting Skills and Technologies Reference Group to facilitate project completion. The position commences in February 2010 and requires the applicant to be based in Melbourne, in proximity to the project supervisors.

The Royal Women’s Hospital is a large tertiary referral Maternity hospital which supervises in excess of 6,000 deliveries each year.
The Fellow in Obstetric Medicine provides clinical care to women with medical conditions during pregnancy, and to medically complex gynaecology patients.
Duties consist of both in-patient and out-patient care.
Much of the workload relates to management of diabetes in pregnancy, as well as other endocrine conditions in pregnant women. The Fellow is a key component of a strong multidisciplinary Diabetes team comprising endocrinologists, obstetricians, DNE’s, dietitians, physiotherapists and ophthalmologist. Approximately 80 women with pre-gestational and 450 women with gestational diabetes deliver at the RWH annually.
The position is recognised as a Core year for purposes of Endocrine training but could also suit a general medicine trainee. It will commence in February 2010 for a period of 12 months.
The position is full-time, remunerated at senior Registrar rates. There are no on-call or after-hours duties.
The applicant will have completed at least 1 year of training for the FRACP, and applicants post-completion of the FRACP will be considered.

Selection Criteria:

1. Medical practitioner registered or able to be registered in NSW
2. Recognised specialist qualifications, Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and / or other specialist recognition. Applicants expecting to be awarded their fellowship within four months may be considered. If successful, the applicant will not be eligible to commence their appointment until the relevant qualifications and requirements are formally completed.
3. Appropriate experience to practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner in Endocrinology and Diabetes Management
4. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills
5. Demonstrated ability to lead and work within a multidisciplinary team environment
6. Demonstrated commitment to teaching and research as relevant to the position
7. Demonstrated interest in quality improvement methodologies
